TERI organizes session on Strategies to Decarbonize Transport Sector during WSDS 2022

|
As part of TERI’s flagship event World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) 2022, the Transport and Urban Governance Division organized a thematic session on Strategies to Decarbonize Transport Sector – A Multi-sectoral Approach on February 16, 2022. During the session, Ms Jaya Varma Sinha (Additional Member, Traffic, Railway Board) officially launched National Transport Decarbonization Council (NTDC), a TERI’s effort which intends to examine high-impact policy solutions and pathways that lead to transport decarbonization, particularly at the central level, and to steer the activities of capacity building and research and simultaneously launched two policy briefs on Private Participation in Rail Freight Terminals and Freight Forwarder Scheme. She also highlighted the multiple steps being taken by the Indian Railways to improve its traffic and further reduce carbon footprint at the same time.
As part of the panel discussion chaired by Mr Sudhendu J Sinha, NITI Aayog, the importance of carbon neutrality and multi-pronged approach towards reducing carbon emissions from the transport sector was underlined. Decarbonization of the heavy commercial vehicles and passenger cars was highlighted as a major challenge with a need to focus on long-term zero emission vehicle deployment targets. Further, the need for continuous investments in public transport, EV infrastructure and support from the financial sector were highlighted. The speakers represented prestigious organizations like NITI Aayog, Indian Railway Board, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, RMI India, and Hewlett Foundation Environment Program, and Asian Clean Fuels Association.

TERI organizes session on Electrification of Heavy-duty Vehicles during WSDS 2022 |

TERI organized a thematic session: Electrification of Heavy-duty Vehicles – An Emergent Economic Opportunity on February 17, 2022. Mr Sharif Qamar, Fellow and Area Convenor, TERI laid down the context and background about the trucking sector before the panel discussion. The panel, comprising national and international speakers, discussed the short-term and immediate steps to incentivize this sector for faster adoption of e-trucks and the long-term action plans towards a zero-emission sector and making India as a global leader in manufacturing and export hub.
The panellists shared the key challenges which are unique to the sector in India, which could pose a problem to the battery performance. It is estimated that electrification of trucks and delivery vehicles could lead to savings worth $97 billion in oil imports and 7 gigatons of carbon emissions by 2050. Some of the other benefits of electric trucks were also highlighted during the session that includes high-driving comfort and with no tail pipe emissions, no occupational health hazard to workers at warehouse and an increased efficiency of the logistics sector. Learning experiences and the best practices from other parts of the globe were also discussed with case studies from the USA, China, Germany, and Finland. The significance and urgency of the dedicated financing from the banking sector and other financial institutions was also one of the topics discussed during the session. The speakers represented organizations such as NITI Aayog, Climate Works Foundation, The Climate Group, Drive to Zero, Hewlett Foundation Environment Program, RMI India, and InfraPrime Logistics.

TERI organizes session on Data-driven Governance for Urban Resilience in Smart Cities during WSDS 2022

TERI organized a thematic session on Data-driven Governance for Urban Resilience in Smart Cities on February 18, 2022. The session aimed to provide a platform for diverse stakeholders leading the mainstreaming resilience effort in the smart cities. They shared their experience in integrating data-driven approaches in resilience planning as well as showcase their ongoing initiatives and results achieved so far. Ms Rhea Srivastava, Research Associate, TERI set the context of the session towards a resilient urban environment by adapting to data driven governance.
Panellists emphasized about creating data ecosystems that will help people get the right kind of evidence to understand where the gaps are, what are the outcomes that need to be achieved and where do we stand today in terms of achieving the benchmarks, highlighting how the national Smart cities mission is trying to resolve the challenges of three core areas in the city, namely; the quality of life, economic growth, and sustainability. The jury agreed on the fact that the future lies in evidence-based data-driven policymaking. The speakers represented organizations such as National Institute for Urban Affairs, Delegation of the European Union to India, Royal Danish Embassy in India, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Urban Planning Department, City of Karlsruhe, Germany, Climate Adaptation Living Lab, Copenhagen, TERI School of Advanced Studies, Transitions Research.

| TERI Participates in DD Urdu’s ‘Yeh Hai India’ Episode for the Discussion topic—Future of E-vehicles in India |

Mr Sharif Qamar, Fellow and Area Convenor, TERI was invited as a speaker in DD Urdu’s ‘Yeh Hai India’ episode for the discussion topic —Future of E-vehicles in India. During the event, he highlighted some key reasons about the buzz for EVs in India, their needs, and the basis for government’s extensive involvement in the EVs. He also mentioned about the types of EVs available in the market today.
Talking about possible challenges, Mr Qamar mentioned about the range anxiety of the users, shortage of charging infrastructure in major places, energy security of India, high upfront costs of EVs and fewer battery manufacturing plants in the country. However, he highlighted that the data suggests that people are accepting the EV technology whole-heartedly.
Mr Qamar also mentioned about some recent initiatives by NITI Aayog and other financial and non-financial institutions that are paving the way for EV market in the country.
