Dear Reader,

August, the month of nostalgia, was celebrated by TERI by reflecting on its remarkable journey of 50 years and the path-breaking efforts of its founders. Colleagues came together to pay tribute to Mr Darbari Seth whose drive and vision led to the establishment of an organization which would go on to become a leading think tank in the sustainability space.

Twenty-third Darbari Seth Memorial Lecture


“India has the potential to emerge as a global leader in innovation, but it requires an exponential mindset—one that is bold, transformative, and inclusive,” said Dr RA Mashelkar, former Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), delivering the 23rd Darbari Seth Memorial Lecture.

This year's hallmark event at TERI’s headquarters paid tribute to the farsighted Founder, Mr Darbari S Seth, and visionary Dr RK Pachauri through inspiring speeches, heartfelt tributes, and recognition of exceptional service and innovation within the institute.

Drivers to Coal Phase-Down in India: Part 1 - Battery Cost Declines


This report is part of a series examining key drivers to accelerate India's power system transition over the next decade. It aims to identify conditions conducive to accelerating decarbonisation of the power system in India. The focus is on highlighting priority areas for Indian policymakers and global stakeholders to prioritise.

This report focuses on BESS cost decline as an important driver for reducing coal dependency in the Indian power sector. It explores the least-cost pathways for the supply and storage mix required to meet future electricity demand from 2024 to 2032. The analysis evaluates various scenarios of battery energy storage system (BESS) cost declines and their impact on coal generation and capacity buildup.

Green Public Procurement for Advancing Sustainable Development in India: Policy Nudges for Promoting Sustainable Consumption and Production
Green Public Procurement (GPP), a sub-component of sustainable public procurement, seeks to achieve environmental sustainability by leveraging the government sector’s purchasing power. GPP can be defined as the deliberate and systematic integration of environmental objectives into the procurement process of goods, services, and works by public agencies. This policy brief employs a case study-based approach to identify strategies for promoting GPP in India

TERI Receives Silver in IWA Project Innovation Awards 2024


TERI’s Advanced Oxidation Technology (TADOX®) for Wastewater Treatment has received ‘Silver Award’ in the prestigious International Water Association (IWA) Project Innovation Awards 2024 in the category of ‘Breakthrough in Research and Development’.

The awarded project titled "Integration of TADOX® Technology to achieve Net Zero in Textile Wastewater Treatment” demonstrated successfully piloted TADOX® Technology in a Textile Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) in Rooma Industrial Area, Kanpur, marking a global 1st-of-its-kind initiative of UV-TiO2 Photocatalysis based Advanced Oxidation Technology for full scale deployment.

On behalf of TERI, the award was received by Dr Nupur Bahadur, the Inventor of TADOX® Technology and Associate Director at NMCG-TERI Centre of Excellence on Water Reuse in TERI, in a special ceremony in Toronto, Canada, on 13th August 2024, during the IWA World Water Congress & Exhibition 2024.

Empowering Youth as Catalysts for Climate Action: 5th Edition of Youth Climate Conclave (YCC) Launched on International Youth Day


Marking International Youth Day, the 5th edition of the Youth Climate Conclave (YCC) was launched on August 12, 2024, with enthusiastic participation from the young innovators across India, united in their mission to develop creative solutions to combat climate change. The virtual event was organized by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) under the EU-India Clean Energy and Climate Partnership (CECP) project, supported by the European Union and managed by the Delegation of the European Union to India, with knowledge support from MoEFCC, GIZ, CEEW, and Climate Fresk.

As She Changes: Seeding People-Centric Transitions in India's Coal Belt


As part of the MacArthur Foundation supported project on Just Transition, TERI initiated a pilot implementation project to showcase the creation of sustainable livelihoods aimed at empowering women in India’s coal mining regions. This video documentary titled 'As She Changes' takes one through the journey of the women across the four villages of Giridih, Jharkhand (Karharbari, Kongdi, Chilga and Tikodih) where TERI had conducted the pilot project focusing on fostering self-reliance through entrepreneurship.

The 4th edition of Water Sustainability Awards aims to encourage the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals by way of reducing water footprint among various stakeholders through the adoption of the ‘water neutrality' approach.

GREEN Olympiad: Deadline Extended
TERI’s flagship initiative ‘GREEN Olympiad 2024’ aims to test the environmental quotient of students and enhance their understanding of issues related to the environment and sustainable development. It is open for students of Std. 4 to 12.
