TERI organizes Panel Discussion on ‘Towards People-Centric Smart City Development’ at WSDS 2023 |

TERI organized a panel discussion on the thematic track ‘Towards People-Centric Smart City Development’, under the World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) on 23rd February 2023. The session aimed at highlighting the importance of participation in smart city initiatives, bringing the concept of ‘inclusive smart cities’ at the forefront.
The session was moderated by Ms Kamilla Kristensen Rai, Counsellor, Delegation of the European Union to India. The speakers were Mr Hitesh Vaidya, Director, National Institute of Urban Affairs; Ms Kathleen McGinty, Vice President and Chief Sustainability Government and Regulatory Affairs Officer, Johnsons Controls; Ms Vaishali Nandan, Project Head, GIZ India; Mr Panagiotis Karamanos, EU International Urban and Regional Cooperation (IURC); Ms Shruti Narayan, Regional Director, South and West Asia, C40 Cities. The discussions were centered on themes such as digital and innovative-smart technologies, disaster management and resilience for vulnerable groups, as well as access to basic services, like health and education. The session concluded with a brief discussion on a participatory approach, where people—especially the vulnerable and marginalized groups of society—are empowered to shape and enforce urban interventions in collaboration with the government.

A panel discussion on the thematic track ‘Towards Net-Zero Emission Target: Electric Vehicles in Freight’ was organized by TERI under WSDS on 23rd February 2023. The session started with how electrification of small commercial vehicles is not an issue, the electrification of light/medium/heavy duty vehicles should be focused on. It was also highlighted that the technology and skilled force required are still lagging.
The session was moderated by Dr AR Sihag, Distinguished Fellow, TERI with the following speakers on the panel: Mr Sameer Pandita, Director, Bureau of Energy Efficiency, GoI; Mr N Mohan, CEO, Delhi EV Cell, Govt. of NCT of Delhi; Ms Trupti Deshpande, Senior Programme Manager, Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation; Mr Amit Bhatt, MD (India), ICCT; and Mr Umesh Revankar, CEO and MD, Shriram Transport Finance Company Ltd. The discussions focused on electric vehicles’ financing and how to avail green-focused funds at a cheaper cost. A vote of thanks by Mr Sharif Qamar, Fellow and Area Convener, TERI brought the programme to a close.

| TERI organizes Panel Discussion on ‘Urban Public Transportation Aiding Net Zero Emission Target’ at WSDS 2023 |

TERI organized a panel discussion on the thematic track ‘Urban Public Transportation Aiding Net Zero Emission Target’, under WSDS on 23rd February 2023. In the thematic track, key issues structured around experiences, challenges, and solutions from experts in the public transport sector. The role of active transportation and multi-modal integration were discussed. The session was moderated by Prof Geetam Tewari, TRIPP Chair Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering of the Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi. The speakers on the panel were Mr T Surya Kiran, Executive Director, Association of State Road Transport Undertakings; Mr Akash Passey, President, Volvo Eicher Commercial Vehicles; Ms Harpreet Kaur Bajaj, Principal Transport Economist, Ramboll; Ms Nitika Krishan, Key Expert, EU Funded Project; and Mr Shri Prakash, Distinguished Fellow. The discussions were focused on multi-modal integration across all public transit modes, along with last-mile connectivity and how it is failing in several cities. The discussion ended with a fruitful summarization of strategies, such as linking public transport with cycling and walking infrastructure.

| TERI releases Report on “An Assessment of Avoided CO2 Emissions during Construction, Maintenance and Operation of National Highways” |
|
TERI released a report on “An Assessment of Avoided CO2 Emissions during Construction, Maintenance, and Operation of National Highways”, in partnership with Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), Indian Institute of Petroleum and Iora Ecological Solutions. The report was released by Shri. Bhupender Yadav, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change during TERI’s annual flagship event, World Sustainable Development Summit 2023.
The report was released in the presence of Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, Vice President of Guyana, Dr Sultan Al Jaber, Special Envoy on Climate Change and COP28 President, UAE, and Dr Vibha Dhawan, Director General, TERI. Detailed guidance about estimating tonnes of CO2 avoided per km of National Highways during the construction, operation, and maintenance phases have been presented in the report and can form the basis for tracking CO2 emitted, or avoided, due to these activities.

| TERI organizes First Phase of Needs Assessment as a part of T-CAP project in Visakhapatnam |
|
TERI conducted the first phase of Needs Assessment, from 4th to 6th January 2023 at Visakhapatnam, as a part of project Transformative Climate Action using participatory data driven decision making platforms (T-CAP). This project takes a living lab approach to facilitate participatory climate-informed decision making at the local level using digital means.
This visit covered seven departments identified through vigorous data analysis of the stakeholder consultation carried out in October last year. It tried to collate information on the degree of involvement of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation with other parastatal departments, as well as their internal coordination. The assessment also tried to evaluate the capacities of these departments in terms of the themes of the project, i.e., climate action, participation, and digitalization.
The discussion focused on maneuvering the agenda on three pillars of the project: climate action, participation, and digitalization. It was developed to understand the involvement of each department on these three aspects and how they integrate, or wish to integrate, their activities with other departments which will further improve the results of actions taken against climate change.

| TERI participates in a Three-day Orientation Programme in Lucknow |

TERI participated in a three-day orientation programme hosted by the Department of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (DoEF&CC), Government of Uttar Pradesh from 14th to 16th February 2023, in Lucknow. Mr Faiz Jamal (Research Associate) participated as an expert on clean transport and contributed to the three-day event.
The DoEF&CC has formed a working group to prepare the DPR for The World Bank funded ‘UP Clean Air Management Project’ (UP-CAMP). The DoEF&CC has nominated TERI to provide project management support for UP-CAMP preparation and implementation. The programme witnessed participation from all members of the working group, TERI experts, the World Bank sectoral experts, officials from the Central Pollution Control Board, Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board, and IIT Kanpurwho shared initial inputs and ideas for the DPR development.

TERI participated in Uddheshya: Mainstreaming Gender from Ideas to Action, organized by WRI India on 22nd March 2023. Mr IV Rao, Distinguished Fellow, TERI was invited as one of the panelists in the event held at India Habitat Center, New Delhi. He highlighted possible opportunities for implementing gender-inclusive mobility in the country and achieving equitable and inclusive transport. Mr Rao also underscored the current status of women commuters in Delhi as well as the challenges faced by them.
Mr Rao further shared his experience from the auto-industry; how women are equally contributing in the core auto-sector. Further, he emphasized that the Original Equipment Manufacturers, or OEMs do not discriminate based upon gender in the process. However, the disproportionate participation of women in the automobile industry needs to be looked at from a socio-cultural perspective as well.

| TERI presents: Decarbonizing Transport Sector Capacity Building Programme, Institute for Human Settlements, Bengaluru |

TERI facilitated a session on ‘Decarbonizing Transport Sector’ organized by the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS), Bengaluru on 21st February 2023. The two-day Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) capacity building workshop saw participation from officials of the State Transport Units (STUs) and transport departments. The event provided an overview of the critical challenges and opportunities in the development of road-based public transport in cities.
At the session, Ms Ruchika Mattoo, Associate Fellow, TERI presented on emission reduction and efficiency improvement and Ms Akshaya Paul, Research Associate, TERI presented on vehicle scrappage. The two topics were included/focused on by the National Transport Decarbonization Council (NTDC). The presentations covered the importance of reduction in emissions from the road transport sector, global practices, policy landscape in India, current challenges that exist in the sector, and the recommendations as a way forward for transport decarbonization.

| TERI participates as a Knowledge Partner in EVOLVE 2023, Kerala |
|
TERI participated as a knowledge partner in EVOLVE 2023: International Conference and Expo on E-Mobility and Alternative Fuels, on 19th–21th January 2023. It was organized by the Motor Vehicle Department, Government of Kerala. Mr Sharif Qamar, Fellow and Area Convenor, TERI moderated the session on ‘Alternate Fuel in Maritime, Freight, and Multi-Modal Transport’, along with speakers Mr Deepu Surendran, Cochin Shipyard; Mr Praveen Thomas Joseph, DP World; and Prof. Dr Rajesh R Nair, IIT Madras. It was an insightful discussion by the panelist, offering positive action points for the state government.
Mr Qamar also participated as a speaker for the session on ‘Alternate Fuels for Transportation’, such as methanol, ethanol, biofuels, biogas, and natural gas. Ms Akshaya Paul, Research Associate, TERI also participated in the conference.

| TERI presents a session on ‘Solar Powered Electric Mobility’ organized by NTPC School of Business (NSB) |
|
TERI contributed to a session on ‘Solar Powered Electric Mobility’, organized by NTPC School of Business (NSB) on 21st March 2023, which undertook a series of virtual training programmes on solar energy for the International Solar Alliance (ISA). During the session, a presentation was delivered by Mr Sharif Qamar, Fellow and Area Convenor.
The importance of solar-powered electric vehicle charging was stressed by Mr Qamar, in relation to the current grid emissions factor. He also gave a brief overview of the types of solar charging stations that are available and discussed some solar-based EV charging station initiatives that have been undertaken in India. In addition, he discussed the government’s initiatives and support in boosting solar powered electricity in the country and shared his recommendations to boost this sector.

TERI contributed to a panel discussion at the conference on ‘Decarbonizing Construction — Building a Low Carbon Future’ on Friday, 13th January 2023 at FICCI Federation House, New Delhi. Mr Sharif Qamar, Associate Director and Area Convenor, TERI moderated the panel discussion on ‘Decarbonizing Road Construction to Facilitate India’s Net Zero Journey’.
The session focused on design, construction, ownership, and operation of facilities targeted for reduced or neutral impact on the environment with respect to carbon footprint. The panelists also addressed current and future government policies and regulations which engineers, architects, owners, and operators should be aware of in order to address environmentally-responsible building requirements.
