In this issue of our newsletter, we bring you snapshots of the 20th edition of our annual flagship event – the World Sustainable Development Summit. The summit was inaugurated on 10th February by the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, who stressed on climate justice in his address. “When each of us understands our individual and collective duties, climate justice will be achieved. India’s intent is supported by concrete action and spirited public efforts. We are on track to exceed our commitments and targets on Paris,” he said.
The three-day summit also hosted several global leaders such as H.E. Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana; Prakash Javadekar, Hon’ble Minister of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India, Dr S Jaishankar, Hon’ble Minister of External Affairs, Government of India, Mohammed Nasheed, Speaker of the People’s Majlis, Republic of Maldives, Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for the European Green Deal, Rt Hon Lord Zac Goldsmith, Minister for Pacific and the Environment at the FCDO, UK, and Rt Hon Alok Sharma MP, COP26 President Designate, UK Cabinet Office; representatives of international organisations such as Amina J Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General, United Nations; climate ambassadors John Forbes Kerry, United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, and Michael Bloomberg, Founder, Bloomberg Philanthropies and United Nations’ Special Envoy for Climate Ambition and Solutions; and many more.
Together, they pressed upon the need for urgency in climate action, achieving green growth, paving the path for net zero emissions by 2050, the role of business and industry in achieving the same, conserving biodiversity, women’s leadership, and a lot more.
In the week following the event, Rt Hon Alok Sharma MP, paid a visit to the TERI headquarters in New Delhi as part of his endeavour to gather voices from around the world in the run up to COP26, which is to be held in Glasgow in UK this November.
We also bid our farewell to Dr Ajay Mathur, Director General, TERI as he moves on to join the International Solar Alliance as Director General. As Government of India’s nominee for the position, Dr Mathur was elected unopposed by the 89-country assembly of the ISA.
Dr Vibha Dhawan, Senior Programme Director, TERI took over as Director General, TERI from March 1, 2021.

In his inaugural address at the World Sustainable Development Summit 2021, Hon'ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, said that climate justice is inspired by a vision of trusteeship where growth comes with greater compassion to the poorest. The event was inaugurated by the Hon'ble Prime Minister in the presence of dignitaries that included H.E. Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, Mohammed Nasheed, Speaker of the People's Majlis, Republic of Maldives (Former President of Maldives), Amina J Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General, United Nations, and Prakash Javadekar, Hon'ble Union Minister of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEF&CC).

High-Level Round Table on Rebooting Green Growth

Leading up to the COP26, the ‘High-Level Round Table on Rebooting Green Growth’ aimed to steer discussions towards strengthening our commitment to maximising renewable energy use, enhancing our capacity to deal with the changing climate, and creating financial flows to help enable these actions.

As countries prepare to negotiate the acceleration of climate action at COP26 in Glasgow, it needs to raise ambition towards achieving net zero emissions, said John Forbes Kerry, United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, at the summit.

Valedictory Session: Collaboration for Green Growth |
|

|
WSDS 2021 concluded with a valedictory session that was addressed by speakers such as the Rt Hon Alok Sharma MP, COP26 President Designate, UK Cabinet Office; Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for the European Green Deal; and Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, Sherpa, G20 Summit.
