TERI organized a panel discussion on the thematic track ‘Fuelling the Future’ under GRIHA Summit on December 15, 2022. The session focused on sustainable fuel alternatives to reduce the demand for fossil-derived fuels and was moderated by Mr Sudhendu J Sinha, Adviser (Infrastructure Connectivity & Electric Mobility) NITI Aayog. The speakers Mr P K Banerjee, Executive Director, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM); Mr Pratik Gupta, Co-founder & CEO, Gensol Electric Vehicles Pvt. Ltd; Mr Amit Bhatt, Managing Director, International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT); Dr Winfried Damm, Head, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH; and Mr Mandar Patil, Manager, RMI India, focused on India’s needs to reduce road fatalities, achieve energy security, commit to global targets, and mitigate air pollution. The discussions were centred on themes such as electric transition, fleet modernization, modal shift to public transport, and dedicated pedestrianization programmes. The session ended with a brief discussion on customization for the path and pace of transport decarbonization in India.

| TERI Organizes Focus Group Discussion on Non-Urban Road Freight in India |

TERI organized a focus group discussion on non-urban road freight transport in India under the project titled “Baseline Study for Non-Urban Road Transport” on October 31, 2022. The discussion was held in hybrid mode and witnessed participation from civil society organizations, research institutes, industry experts, and logistic companies. A brief presentation was delivered by the team highlighting the market trend of heavy-duty vehicle and trucking sectors in India, relevance of PAT scheme, key learnings from global green freight programmes, and methodology adopted under the study. Participants discussed various strategies to improve the efficiency of non-urban road transport in India.

| TERI Initiates Project T-CAP in Visakhapatnam |

TERI initiated project “Transformative Climate Action Using Participatory Data-Driven Decision-Making Platforms (T-CAP), which takes a living lab approach to facilitate participatory, climate-informed decision-making at the local level using digital means. To officially kick-start the project in person and to interact with the targeted groups the team members from TERI, UNU-EHS, and NIUA visited Visakhapatnam from October 18–20, 2022.
The team met and introduced the project to the commissioner Mr Raja Babu and conducted consultation workshops with GVMC officials, CSOs, and NGOs. A presentation was given by the project team to align the officials and other stakeholders with the project scope and the roles and responsibilities. The deliberation was conducted on three broad themes of the project—Climate Action, Participation, and Digitalization; where the challenges and opportunities within these heads were discussed. The workshop provided a brief initial understanding on the areas of concerns and challenges of the project.

| TERI Participates in European Union’s Urban Sustainability and Smart City Event in Panaji |

TERI participated in the Urban Sustainability and Smart City (USSC) event in Panaji, held on November 21–22, 2022. The event was conducted under the India-EU Urban Partnership (IEUP), a project between the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the Government of India, and the European Union, to support the implementation of smart, resilient, and sustainable urban development in India. Ms Anushree Harde, Research Associate, TERI and Mr Kunal Kumar, Research Associate, TERI, participated in the event which discussed developments in the areas of mobility, solid waste management, and urban resilience. The AETS IEUP project team facilitated the event over two days and had participants from the public and private sectors from India and the EU.

| TERI Participates in the 15th Urban Mobility India Conference |

The 15th Urban Mobility India Conference and Expo was held from November 4–6, 2022 in Kochi. The conference held discussions and research symposiums around the current transport sector for sustainable solutions and roadmap for implementation.
Owing to the initial level of penetration of electric vehicles in India, it is utmost important to assess the current EV readiness of Indian cities. Piyush Saxena, Project Associate, TERI presented his paper on “Assessing EV readiness of an Indian City: A Case Study of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh”.
Ms Akshaya Paul, Project Associate, TERI presented on “Assessment of foot over bridges in Delhi” under the Public Transport and NMT research symposium. The study looked at mobility parameters and the sociological perspective of pedestrians while utilizing the FOBs. It recommends improvements for conducive pedestrian movement and better accessible and user-friendly pedestrian crossing facilities.

| TERI Contributes to the 1st Sustainable Logistic Summit |

TERI contributed to the 1st Sustainable Logistic Summit held on November 14, 2022 at ABB Peenya unit, Bangalore. The summit was organized by ABB and discussed the approach and purpose towards establishing low carbon society, carbon neutral operation, and GHG emission reductions, etc. Mr Sharif Qamar, Fellow & Area Convenor, TERI, delivered a presentation on 'CO2 Management in Transportation'. In his presentation, discussions were centred on TERI’s Freight GHG calculator, which has been developed to help users to estimate the emissions and costs on account of movement of freight through different transport modes in India.

| TERI Commences Work on the Traffic Decongestion Project for the City of Patna |

TERI is working with the Bihar State Pollution Control Board (BSPCB) to decongest eight traffic hotspots in the capital city of Patna. As part of the study, Mr Kumar Kunal, Research Associate, TERI, visited the sites on December 8–9, 2022, and interacted with traffic department and relevant stakeholders. The visit to Patna this time included the discussion on the short-, medium-, and long-term recommendations provided over the period of research and implementation plan. The first phase of implementation will begin in late December 2022 where four out of eight hotspots will be tried on with the short-term recommendations to reduce traffic congestion. In the meeting with Traffic Superintendent of Police (SP) of Patna, Mr Anil Kumar, and Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSPs) of the respective areas, certain changes, and flexibilities in the implementation of recommendations were discussed.

TERI contributed to a panel discussion on Sustainable Transport in COP27 on November 16, 2022, at Pakistan Pavilion in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, co-organized by Pakistan and CTCN. The discussion brought together experts to share experiences from China, India, Sri Lanka, and around the world on integrated approaches for sustainable transport, in their multiple dimensions—climatic, environmental, economic, and social. The session focused on sustainable urban transport and its critical linkages with climate resilience and was moderated by Mr Rajiv Garg, Regional Manager, CTCN.
The panelists Mr Matthew Kennedy, Senior Advisor to the CTCN and former Advisory Board Member, Ms Tu My Tran, Head of Sustainable Mobility, ICLEI World Secretariat, Dr Thusitha Sugathapala, Moratuwa University, Sri Lanka, and Ms Shaily Mahera, Manager, GRIHA Council, India, highlighted the need of public inclusivity in transport sector, building infrastructure to withstand the effects of climate change, and electrifying transport to make it more sustainable in the cities. The session ended with a summary of key points gathered from each panelist, followed by a brief Q&A discussion.

TERI contributes to ‘Driving the Transition to Zero-Emission Trucks (ZETs) in India’ workshop which was organized by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) to discuss the opportunities for a ZET transition in India on December 14, 2022. The workshop brought to notice the recent uptick in electric bus sales in India which has demonstrated that ZEVs are a superior and cost-effective solution in urban fixed-route fleets with dedicated parking depots. Targeted policies and schemes have played a significant role in the uptake of electric buses in India. However, given the nascency of the battery electric trucks (BETs) and hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks (FCETs) in India, there are many uncertainties about their technical and economic feasibility.
It brought together policymakers, auto-industry, and global experts to deliberate on demand- and supply-side policy levers to deploy ZETs at scale. Mr IV Rao, Distinguished Fellow, TERI emphasized on need of pilots for the deployment of ZETs, charging infrastructure, non-availability of local materials for mass production, and skill deployment. ICCT’s recent research on the topic further added context to the deliberations.

| TERI Participates in EV Ecosystem Conclave 2022 |

TERI participated in the EV Ecosystem Conclave, organized by IIT (BHU), Varanasi, its Alumni bodies and Pro MFG Media, on December 7, 2022, which brought together the entire e-mobility ecosystem on one platform. The stakeholders discussed to build the roadmap for India’s journey into the e-mobility future. With the EV ecosystem transforming with respect to engineering, manufacturing processes, innovations in design, advancements in battery technology, charging infrastructure and emerging start-ups and solution providers, the conclave discussed the challenges and opportunities in India. Mr IV Rao, Distinguished Fellow, TERI, spoke about various options for transport decarbonization in India with focus on sustainable mobility solutions and avoid-shift-improve principle. As an integral part of the full-day summit featuring global and Indian experts, an exhibition space “Start-up Street” was created to provide opportunities for Start-ups to showcase their solutions.

| TERI Contributes to the FE Electric Mobility Summit 2022 |

TERI contributed to the Electric Mobility Summit organized by Financial Express (FE) on November 17, 2022, with the aim to support India’s ambition of leading the electric mobility space. The summit brought together various stakeholders, sector experts to share experiences on the potential and challenges of electric mobility in India. The discussions were centred around the need to improve on capacity and skilling perspectives and improvement of R&D facilities and the supplementary role of HFCVs to BEVs was highlighted. The keynote address at the summit was delivered by Dr Vibha Dhawan, Director General, TERI. The speakers Mr Manish Raj Singhania, Managing director, FADA; Mr Akash Passey, President, VECV; Mr Atul Arya, Head Energy Systems division, Panasonic India; Mr Saket Sapra, Managing Director, Dana TM4 India Pvt. Ltd, highlighted the need to nurture startups and ecosystem, and develop downstream firms (producing electrolytes, cathodes, anodes, etc.) for greater localization. The panel discussions were held on India’s potential for EV Hub, localizing EV supply chain, battery swapping or fixed charging, and new business models to accelerate EV ecosystem.
