Dear Reader,

As August unfolds, we are excited to look back at the significant progress TERI achieved throughout July. Last month was a period of intense focus and impactful work, further solidifying our dedication to environmental sustainability and cutting-edge research.

We entered an MOU with the HE Mr Tekeeua Tarati, Minister for Infrastructure and Sustainable Energy, Kiribati. We hosted a Master Trainers’ Workshop for Paryavaran Sanrakshaks and we participated at the 7th Meeting of the ISA Regional Committee for Asia and Pacific Region in Colombo, Sri Lanka. We are carrying this momentum forward, eager to see what new breakthroughs and collaborations August will bring.

Dr Vibha Dhawan, Director General, TERI, participated in the 7th Meeting of the International Solar Alliance Regional Committee for Asia and the Pacific Region, held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, between July 16-17, 2025. She was part of a session themed, Regional Energy Cooperation & Cross Border Electricity Trade - Opportunities and Challenges. The session was moderated by Mr Ashish Khanna, Director General, International Solar Alliance.

TERI Hosts a Roundtable on Breaking the REDD + Deadlock

TERI is working on REDD based carbon finance projects across India. However, many of these remain stalled due to lack of contextual alignment in standard requirements. Thus, an urgent need to break the deadlock by evolving India-specific operational guidelines within the existing frameworks to unlock the immense carbon finance potential from India’s degraded forests. Films under CCPME Initiative

Cities Combating Plastic Entering the Marine Environment (CCPME) initiative aims to shift societal behaviors toward plastic waste and its impact on marine ecosystems. Through awareness campaigns and advocacy for no littering, waste segregation, and disposal, it endeavors to reduce plastic pollution entering the riverine and marine ecosystems and safeguard the marine environment. These short films are joint production of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

CleanUP Kochi: A City's Quest to Save the Sea

Kochi’s coastline has long suffered from plastic pollution and marine litter. Under the CCPME project, the Heal Kochi initiative brings together local communities, government bodies, NGOs, and youth to clean up marine hotspots, promote waste segregation, and drive behavioral change. From clean-up drives in Kaloor, Fort Kochi, and the Island Area to awareness campaigns and school-led initiatives, Kochi is showing how collective action can revive our waters.

CleanUp Kanpur: A City’s Journey towards a Cleaner Ganga

Kanpur, once known for its spiritual connection to the Ganga, is now confronting the harsh reality of plastic pollution choking its waterways. As part of the CCPME project, the CleanUP Kanpur initiative is bringing together communities, schools, and institutions to restore the river’s health. From clean-up drives at COD Drain, Halwakhanda Drain, and Parmat Ghat to plog walks, zero-waste campaigns, Plastic Ki Pathshala sessions, and community art projects, the city is turning awareness into action. Events like the 3R Eco Mela, Boat Pe Charcha, and the world’s largest plastic-waste Ludo board have inspired public engagement and celebrated local champions.

CleanUP Port Blair: A City's Battle for a Cleaner Future

Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, is battling a growing plastic crisis that threatens its delicate marine ecosystem. Under the CCPME project, the CleanUP Port Blair initiative is uniting the city’s citizens, schools, and institutions to reduce waste, promote segregation, and revive marine hotspots. From clean-up drives at Junglighat, R.K. Mission, and Carbyn’s Cove to school-led expos, zero-waste campaigns, and training for waste workers and fishermen, the initiative is building an island-wide movement for change.

Registrations Open for the GREEN Olympiad 2025
Deadline: August 18, 2025

GREEN Olympiad is a leading school-based initiative of TERI. The journey started in 1999 as India’s premier environment quiz for school students. It has since then incorporated within itself several stages of initiatives at TERI in the field of sustainability transformation to match the aspirations of the academic community to establish as an Environment Education brand. Reaching out to nearly 2000 schools annually in India and abroad, this Olympiad is designed for students of Std. 4–12. The overall objective of this initiative is to sensitize and build capacity of students on environment, sustainability, and green skill.

Darbari Seth Memorial Lecture

The 24th Darbari Seth Memorial Lecture, an important annual event that reflects TERI’s continued commitment to sustainability — a vision deeply rooted in our foundation and inspired by the ideals of our founder, Mr. Darbari S. Seth , will be held on Wednesday, 20 August 2025, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m at Stein Auditorium, IHC. This year’s distinguished speakers include Shri Nitin Gadkari, Hon’ble Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India, who will be delivering the Presidential Address and Mr Ashish Khanna, Director General, International Solar Alliance, who will be delivering the Twenty-Fourth Darbari Seth Memorial Lecture.
