TERI Hosted Global Leaders at the 6th RD20 Conference Held in New Delhi, India

The 6th RD20 Conference, a premier global platform for advancing clean energy technologies, was hosted by TERI in New Delhi, India. Organized in partnership with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India, this marked the first time the conference was held outside Japan, underscoring India’s pivotal role in driving global energy innovation.

Over five days, leading research institutions, industry experts, and policymakers from G20 nations met and convened to explore innovative pathways for achieving carbon neutrality through enhanced international collaboration in the clean energy domain.

Collaborations
CFCL and TERI Sign MoU to Establish Centre of Excellence for Advanced and Sustainable Agriculture Solutions

The agreement for research focusses on advancing biogenic innovations to develop efficacious and eco-safe products for crop nutrition and crop protection in order to achieve sustainability in agriculture. The joint initiative of Chambal Fertilisers and Chemicals Limited and TERI aims to address the pressing challenges in the Indian agriculture sector, such as stagnating agricultural productivity, soil health degradation, poor nutrient use efficiency, reduced response (resistance) to chemicals and negative impact of excessive synthetic inputs on environment and human health, by developing innovative biogenic solutions, such as nano biotechnology based alternative fertilizers, bio-fertilizers, bio-stimulants, and biological control agents and biopesticides which would have no negative impact on environment and human health and provide improved benefit to cost ratio to farmers.

TERI signs MoU with the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE)

TERI and National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) signed an MoU on 'Strategic Association on Solar Energy and Renewables'. The collaboration focuses on advancing renewable energy through rooftop solar PV, decentralized systems, energy storage, solar cooling, electric vehicles, and smart grids, while also fostering capacity building and training for stakeholders like urban bodies and government officials. It includes establishing an incubation center to develop business models, provide consulting, and monitor technology performance, with research priorities on solar panel recycling, energy storage, Agri-PV standardization, and green hydrogen technologies.

Reports and Publications
Climate Change and Health: Review of Evidence for the Indo-Pacific Region
The study acknowledges the geographical and economic diversity of the region, presenting findings grouped by relevant sub-categories of countries and Climate Sensitive Diseases. Additionally, in-depth case studies have been developed by eleven representative countries of India, Bangladesh, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, Cambodia, Malaysia, Nepal, Tuvalu and Fiji considering factors such as country size, income status, vulnerability to climate risks and existing health system status. The research aims to provide valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities for making health systems in the Indo-Pacific region more resilient and sustainable in the face of climate change.

In the News
A holistic approach to water conservation

"There is a need to adopt a comprehensive approach to tackle ground water crises by focusing on restoring the hydrological cycle and rejuvenating water bodies in the country. The primary goal should be to restore natural conditions in surface water resources such as rivers, streams, lakes, storm drains and reservoirs. There is a need to take steps for rainwater percolation into groundwater aquifers with an aim to improve water percolation through soil layers and facilitate groundwater recharge", writes Dr SK Sarkar, Distinguished Fellow, TERI, in his op-ed for The Hindu Business Line.

COP29: Stalemate on climate finance

"By trying to shift the burden on emerging economies and keeping the interests and needs of the vulnerable populations on margin, developed countries have aggressively pushed to open the negotiations on equity principles at COP29. Irrespective of the number finally agreed at the COP29, the intent made abundantly clear by developed countries is alarming", writes Dr Manish Kumar Shrivastava, Associate Director, TERI, in his op-ed for The Pioneer.

India's climate challenge and the rise of a new green economy

"India's current climate trajectory is characterized by increasingly frequent and severe weather anomalies, from the inundating floods in Mumbai to the relentless heatwaves across Rajasthan. The repercussions of these events are profound, affecting millions and placing substantial strain on national resources. The imperative for action transcends ecological concerns, extending deeply into the economic sphere. Climate change looms as a formidable threat to agriculture, which sustains over half of India's workforce, thus posing direct challenges to the nation’s food security and overall economic stability", writes Dr Vibha Dhawan, Director General, TERI, in her op-ed for Mint.

National Clean Air Programme: Progress, Challenges, and the Need for Targeted Reforms

"When NCAP was launched in the year 2019, due to the lack of sufficient air quality monitoring stations for PM2.5 across the country, PM10 was selected as a performance matrix for allocation of funds to improve air quality. However, PM10 concentration is majorly influenced by wind-blown dust which explains the tendency of cities to overspend in only one sector i.e. Road Dust (67%). This is the right time for the government to switch from PM10 to PM2.5 based targets allocations as most of the NCAP cities now have monitoring networks for PM2.5 concentration", write Dr Anju Goel, Associate Director; and Mr Harshit Gupta, Consultant, TERI, in their op-ed for The Financial Express.

Events
High-Level Roundtable Discussion on COP29 Debriefing Organized

A high-level roundtable discussion titled ‘Future of Climate Change Negotiations: Lessons from COP29’ was held in New Delhi, organized by TERI. The event brought together experts, policymakers, and industry leaders to reflect on the outcomes of the 29th Annual Conference of Parties to the UNFCCC (COP29), held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11 to 23 November 2024

The discussion focussed on the critical challenges and opportunities for the Global South, particularly in areas such as climate finance, adaptation, and energy transition, offering diverse perspectives on the developments at COP29 and the road ahead.

TERI Holds Workshop on Solar Geoengineering Scenario Development

TERI in collaboration with the Alliance for Just Deliberation on Solar Geoengineering (DSG), and the School of Global Policy and Strategy at the University of California and Scripps Institute of Oceanography organized a workshop focusing on SRM Geoengineering Scenarios. About 30 researchers from the fields of meteorology, environmental science, climate modelling, atmospheric chemistry, engineering, economics, and governance explored the status of research relating to Solar Radiation Management (SRM) technologies.

Empowering Educators for Environmental Action: A TSF-TERI Green School Workshop

'The Green School,' an initiative for uniting the efforts of the Tata Steel Foundation (TSF) and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) towards creating environment awareness among the school children and developing their knowledge in this area. By interweaving themes like Energy, Water, Forest & Biodiversity, and Waste with Climate Change and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 'The Green School' empowers the youth to champion our planet's well-being by instigating behavioural transformations.

The primary objective of the workshop was deepening teachers’ comprehension of the project, reinforcing their knowledge, and cultivating collaborative ideas for embracing environmentally sustainable practices.
