On 29 October 2024, TERI hosted an engaging side event at United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), Bangkok, titled 'Empowering Sustainable Cooling Solutions - Advancing the India Cooling Action Plan (ICAP)'. Senior Director, Mr Sanjay Seth welcomed experts, followed by insightful addresses from Mrs Rajasree Ray, Economic Advisor, Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), and Mr Aditya Narayan Singh, Director, Ozone Cell, MoEF&CC.
Discussions focused on India's sustainable cooling initiatives, balancing affordability and sustainability for tropical regions. Key themes included:
- Innovative policies for energy-efficient cooling technologies.
- Integration of green building systems to promote sustainable practices.
- Strengthening the servicing sector with skill enhancement.
- Streamlining sustainable cooling supply chains.
- Financial mechanisms and raising consumer awareness.
The event underscored TERI's dedication to advancing ICAP's goals, fostering collaboration, and leading innovative solutions. This collective effort aligns with India's climate goals and showcases a replicable model for sustainable cooling worldwide. Together, we are paving the way for a greener, cooler future.

TERI ORGANIZES NATIONAL STAKEHOLDER ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION ON 'FACILITATING THE ADOPTION OF SUPER EFFICIENT COOLING TECHNOLOGIES IN INDIA' |

On 17 October 2024, TERI convened the National Stakeholder Roundtable at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, to facilitate discussions on adopting super-efficient cooling technologies in India. Senior Director, Mr Sanjay Seth welcomed participants and set the agenda, emphasizing the alignment with the India Cooling Action Plan (ICAP).
Presentations by TERI, Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT) University, and Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) highlighted innovative research on advanced cooling technologies. Findings revealed super-efficient air conditioners could achieve up to 75% energy savings on humid days, significantly reducing climate impact with supportive policies.
Discussions spanned policy recommendations, supply chain challenges, and consumer awareness. Key insights included integrating lifecycle costs into efficiency metrics, promoting local manufacturing of high-efficiency components, and aligning AC systems with building designs. Collaborative approaches, such as targeted consumer education and transparent refrigerant labelling, were identified as critical to market adoption.
The event concluded with a call for holistic strategies encompassing policy incentives, technological innovation, and stakeholder collaboration. TERI's efforts reaffirm India's commitment to sustainable cooling solutions and climate resilience, aiming to achieve ICAP's goals and position India as a leader in green cooling technologies.

On 25 November 2024, TERI and Knauf India Private Limited formalized a strategic partnership by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to drive innovation and sustainability in the construction sector, with a focus on lightweight building solutions. This collaboration will encompass training programmes, advanced material testing, and the development of net-zero road maps for emissions reduction. Further, working on integrating research insights into Indian building codes and providing technical consultancy, the partnership aims to foster environmentally responsible practices and pave the way for a greener, more sustainable built environment.

CELEBRATING ACHIEVEMENTS OF SUSTAINABLE BUILDINGS DIVISION, TERI AT THE 16TH GRIHA SUMMIT 2024 |

The 16th GRIHA Summit, held on December 4-5 2024, celebrated significant achievements in sustainable development. TERI, as a consulting partner, played a pivotal role in guiding projects towards green building excellence. Among the highlights, the National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes and Narcotics (NACIN) Palasamudram campus received a 5-star rating for its Masterplan under the GRIHA for Large Development (GRIHA LD) Rating, reflecting exceptional adherence to sustainability principles. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) office in Bhopal and the Indian Habitat Centre (IHC) received 4-star ratings under GRIHA, with IHC being recognized for sustainable upgrades in its Existing Building. Additionally, two projects in East Kidwai Nagar-the General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) Colony and the Office Block-achieved 3-star ratings under GRIHA for Existing Buildings. As a leading advocate for sustainable development, Sustainable Buildings, TERI continues to inspire and lead green transformations, building a more sustainable and energy-efficient future for India.

TERI CONDUCTS A 2-DAY WORKSHOP ON BUILDING PERFORMANCE SIMULATION AT SJB SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE AND PLANNING |

TERI organized a 2-day workshop on Building Performance Simulation at SJB School of Architecture and Planning, Bengaluru on 5-6 November 2024. The intent of the programme was to introduce students to energy-efficient practices in architecture and their application into building design. By understanding the concepts and tools for the design of sustainable architecture, the students are empowered to optimize their academic and future projects with sustainable practices.
The 2-day programme comprised sessions on Concepts of Sun-path and Principles of Optimizing Building Geometry for Sun Control, Shading Analysis and Designing of Shading Devices, Fundamentals of Light and Visual Comfort and Prediction of Daylight Distribution in Interiors, Concepts of Airflow and Natural Ventilation and the Design of Naturally Ventilated Spaces to Maximize Thermal Comfort. The simulation software tools introduced during the workshop were Rhinoceros, Grasshopper, Ladybug tools, Radiance and OpenFOAM. Hands-on sessions enabled the participants to actively use the software. All participants received participation certificates, and the Dean of the School expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the workshop.

Mahindra-TERI Centre of Excellence (MTCoE) set up a kiosk at the 16th GRIHA Summit on 4-5 December 2024 at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. It emphasized on science-based solutions for India's future-built environment, intending to reduce the energy footprint of the real-estate industry. The core working team members of the Centre interacted with various stakeholders and showcased their work on Material Testing, Sustainable Water Use, Thermal Comfort, Visual Comfort, and Sky Modelling for India.

On 12 November 2024, the TERI Sustainable Buildings team actively participated in the Green Carnival - Plogging Event, organized by the GRIHA Council under the Paryavaran Rakshak Programme 3.0 at Lajpat Nagar Central Market, New Delhi. Plogging, a unique eco-friendly activity that blends jogging with litter collection through which participants experienced the direct impact of combining fitness with environmental stewardship. The event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of waste segregation at the source and highlighted how small actions can significantly reduce the waste burden on landfills.

Attended by Mr Yatin Choudhary, Fellow, and Ms Sheen Pandita, Research Associate, from TERI, on 4 December 2024 at Atal Akshay Urja Bhawan, MNRE, New Delhi the workshop brought together a diverse group of stakeholders from India and abroad, including officials from government ministries, building developers, solar EPC firms, manufacturers, research institutions, architects, and other experts. Participants discussed the global status of BIPVs in design, manufacturing, and deployment while addressing India-specific needs, such as standards and market requirements.
As one of the speakers, Mr Yatin Choudhary highlighted examples and challenges faced in implementing BIPV solutions within the Indian context. Additionally, draft guidelines for BIPV use in India, authored by GIZ, the Center for Study of Science, Technology, and Policy (CSTEP), and the School of Planning and Architecture, were officially released during the event.

It discusses our unquestioned reliance on red clay bricks despite availability of the environmentally benign materials, highlighting their environmental impact and exploring sustainable alternatives like fly ash bricks. Lighter, cost-effective, and eco-friendly, these modern materials align with today's needs for climate-conscious construction. It's a call to rethink tradition and embrace a sustainable future.
