INTEGRATING ENERGY EFFICIENCY INTO INDIA’S BUILDING REGULATIONS |
| |
TERI, with support from GIZ India and the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), convened a national-level roundtable in New Delhi on 25 November 2025 under the Urban Act project to support revisions to the Model Building Byelaws (MBBL) and the URDPFI Guidelines.
The discussions were anchored by technical inputs from TERI’s Buildings Division, which is supporting the integration of energy efficiency and sustainability provisions into the MBBL, with a specific focus on aligning building byelaws with the Energy Conservation and Sustainable Building Codes (ECSBC/ECSBC-R) and strengthening implementation by urban local bodies.
Participants discussed practical pathways to mainstream energy-efficient building design within regulatory frameworks and to harmonize building-level performance requirements with broader urban planning guidelines.
The outcomes of the roundtable will feed into a technical advisory note to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), outlining key recommendations for strengthening building regulations to enable low-carbon and climate-responsive urban development.
