April 2025:
News, Views, and Updates from TERI

Dear Reader,

Building on the dynamic rhythm established in March, TERI continued its steady progress in the month of April 2025. We hosted the Felicitation Ceremony for the GREEN Olympiad winners of 2024; led a training on climate resilient integrated watershed management and entered an MoU with the Government of Goa for the establishment of a "Centre of Excellence for Natural Resource Management and Ecotourism" in the state.

We also carried out significant research projects and published policy briefs, things and events that kept the momentum going for us.

Things are really picking up speed, and we’re super excited about what's still to come this year! We think there will be lots of important things happening, and we can't wait to share them with you.

Pathways for the Indian Steel Sector: Realizing Low Carbon Industrial Clusters in Eastern India Through a Place-Based Approach

There is an increasing realization that effective low carbon growth of our societies requires urgent, broad-scale changes at a systemic level in how we manufacture and consume products. One such area of focus is the production of iron and steel, which among heavy industries is the largest source of CO2 emissions and the second largest energy user, responsible for around 7% of global emissions from the energy system. Iron and steel production is heavily dependent on fossil fuels due to the high heat requirements needed in these processes. To reduce carbon emissions from production processes effectively, nothing short of industrial transformation is required.

Burning Point: Increasing Heatwaves Threaten Lives Across India

MoU Goa

“Projections further indicate a rise in maximum and minimum temperatures across the subcontinent, along with an increase in the number of hot days in the coming decades. As a result of this temperature rise, heatwave conditions have become more frequent. The data over the years show how these incidences have increased, causing greater impact. Climate change contributes to the increased risks associated with heatwaves, thereby threatening the lives of many,” write Ms Suruchi Bhadwal and Mr K Venkatramana in their article for the TERI Web Desk.
