Dear Reader,
COP29 is approaching, and the discourse on climate action is in overdrive. Climate Week in New York emphasized on the need for urgent climate action and set the stage for world leaders to build momentum for supporting finance negotiations in Baku.
TERI’s activities widened during the month of September where it actively participated in the 1st International Solar Festival and 8th India Water Week at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. Additionally, it came out with pertinent policy briefs and events leading to the climate conference.

The water sector in India is facing increasing variability and unpredictability of water resources due to climate change. This is compounded by inadequate infrastructure for water storage and distribution, and the insufficient integration of climate resilience into water management policies. This is highlighted by the IPCC's Sixth Assessment Report. Key threats include extreme weather events, rising temperatures, erratic monsoons, and sea level rise, impacting agriculture, industry, ecosystems, and overall water security.

The knowledge document examines the critical synergies between climate action and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), highlighting their implications for multilateralism. Despite the adoption of the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, global progress remains insufficient, with only 13.6% of SDG targets on track. The interconnected nature of climate and SDG actions is evident, as aligning these efforts could significantly enhance global economic output and resilience.

Aluminium: Central to the Vision of a Progressive Economy
"The domestic industry is a key component of the overall manufacturing sector. Aluminium production has more than doubled over the past two decades, moving from 1.7 million tonnes in 2003 to 4.1 million tonnes in 2023. Aluminium consumption in India has also expanded rapidly and is expected to touch 10 million tonnes by 2033,” writes Dr Vibha Dhawan, Director General, TERI, in her op-ed for ET Manufacturing.

Traditional Knowledge for Resilient Agriculture in Northeast India
“Climate change presents global challenges by affecting food security, human health, water availability, and socio-economic development, potentially decreasing crop yields by 3-7 percent as temperatures rise. This could result in a higher likelihood of hunger and undernourishment for 86 percent small and marginal farmers in India," writes Dr Dipankar Saharia, Senior Director, TERI, in his op-ed for Agriculture Today’s September edition.

G20 Or COP29, West will Keep Choosing Politics Over Climate
"At its COP in Paris in 2015, the UNFCCC had agreed that a new and collective - not individual country commitments - quantified financing goal would be established. In the decade since, several key matters remain stalled, including the elusive number for the NCQG that developing countries want to know and are calling for. India has called for $1 trillion a year,” writes Mr Manjeev Puri, Distinguished Fellow, TERI, in his op-ed for NDTV.

The Hidden Toll of Climate Change: India’s Struggle with Eco-anxiety and Mental Health
"India has already witnessed numerous climate-induced disasters that have exacerbated mental health issues. According to the National Institute of Disaster Management, India experienced 1,058 climate-related events, including floods, cyclones, droughts, cold waves, and heatwaves between 1995 and 2020. These disasters often result in severe psychological consequences,” writes Dr Varada Madge, Fellow, TERI, in her op-ed for The Pioneer.
