Photo story: Kashmir's crown Kolahoi glacier is in deep water

Kolahoi Glacier in Kashmir is one of the indispensable glaciated zones of Western Himalaya. The 5-km-long glacier is the source of Lidder River which feeds into the river Jhelum. Due to rise in average temperature in Jhelum Basin, scarcity and shift in timing of snowfall, along with increased human activity, Kolahoi has been losing ice at an alarming rate since 2000. The rapid melting of the glacier and the loss of snow cover area pose an imminent threat to the livelihoods of downstream communities dependent on meltwater.

Since 2008, TERI’s Glacier Research Programme has been analysing climatic and hydrological changes in the region with an objective to assess melt contribution of Kolahoi to the river and the degree of livelihood dependence of locals. This photo story presents key findings of the programme from the Jhelum Basin.

When Every Drop Counts: A documentary on the legacy of rainwater harvesting

Barmer falls in one of the driest regions of the world- the Thar Desert in Rajasthan. This region had a rich legacy of rainwater harvesting that gradually eroded with time. This film tells the inspiring story of how the district administration in Barmer revived this tradition under the Mahatama Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) to give livelihood and life-long drinking water security to poor families.
