Glossary 107
GlossARy
Alternating current (Ac): Electric current that reverses direction at frequent intervals, usually many
times a second.
Amorphous: Pertaining to a solid that is non-crystalline, having neither form nor structure.
Battery: A storage device in which electricity generated from solar panel is stored.
color rendering Index (crI): It is a measure of the effect of light on the perceived colour of objects.
A low CRI indicates that some colours may appear unnatural when illuminated by the lamp.
direct current (dc): Electric current that flows in one direction only.
Footcandle: (British unit of illuminance) illuminance on a surface one square foot in area on which
a light flux of one lumen is uniformly distributed. One footcandle equals 10.76 lux.
Gasifier: A reactor that converts biomass into clean gaseous fuel called producer gas.
Illuminance (E): The density of luminous flux incident on a surface; the quotient of the flux divided
by the area of the surface, when the surface is uniformly illuminated.
Initial Lamp Lumens (LL): Initial bare bulb lumen output of a light source.
Lamp Lumen depreciation Factor (LLd): A design factor used to depreciate the output of a lamp
due to life-cycle output reduction. In general practice, LLD = 0.80.
Lumen: A unit of measure of the quantity of light. It is a unit of luminous flux; the flux emitted within
a unit solid angle by a point source with a uniform luminous intensity of one candela. One lux is one
lumen per square meter.
Luminaire dirt depreciation Factor (Ldd): A design factor used to depreciate the output of a
lamp due to dirt affecting the interior and exterior of the luminaire, and to some extent the lamp
itself. Various degrees of dirt accumulation may be anticipated depending on the area in which the
luminaire is located. In general practice, LDD = 0.90.
