Criterion 25: Resource recovery from waste (2 points)
This suggests resource recovery from the recyclable and bio-degradable waste to reduce the burden
on landfills.

Non-applicability condition: If organic waste generation is below 100 kg/day.

Health and well-being

The primary purpose of a building is to provide a comfortable and healthy environment to its
inhabitants. There are various ways in which a building can affect the health and well-being of
its occupants, such as the quality of indoor air, potable water quality, noise levels in and around
the building, and so on. Design of a green building should be such that it provides maximum user
comfort, enhances productivity of its occupants, and does not have any negative impact on the
environment.
This section covers the following GRIHA criteria.

Criterion 26: Use of low-volatile organic compounds (VOC) paints/adhesives/ sealants (3 points)
This suggests the use of only low VOC paints in the interior of the buildings and water-based rather
than solvent-based sealants and adhesives.

Criterion 27: Minimize ozone-depleting substances (Mandatory 1 point)
This suggests the use of 100% zero ozone depletion potential (ODP) insulation, HCFC and CFC free
HVAC and refrigeration equipments, and halon free fire suppression and fire extinguishing systems.

Criterion 28: Ensure good water quality (Mandatory 2 points)
This suggests provision for good potable quality water for drinking/washing purposes as
prescribed by the standards and ensures that treated wastewater meets the desired standards for
reuse/disposal.

Criterion 29: Acceptable outdoor and indoor noise levels (2 points)
This suggests the use of appropriate noise control for providing acceptable levels of outdoor and
indoor noise levels to enhance comfort.

Criterion 30: Tobacco and smoke control (1 point)
This suggests putting in place health strategies to ensure zero exposure of the non-smokers to
passive smoking.

Criterion 31: Provide minimum level of accessibility for persons with disabilities (1 point)
This suggests appropriate designing of interior and exterior of the building to ensure its accessibility
and usability of the building and its facilities by people with disabilities.

Building operation and maintenance

Many a time it happens that although a building has been designed as a green building, its
performance is not as per what was predicted during the design and development stage. Lack of
