Recommended illuminances in NBC-2005

A range of illuminances, rather than a single value of illuminance, is recommended for each type
of interior or activity. Each range consists of three successive steps of the recommended scale of
illuminances. For working interiors, the middle value of each range represents the recommended
service illuminance that would be used unless one or more of the factors mentioned below apply.

The higher value of the range should be used when:
a. Unusually low reflectance or contrasts are present in the task
b. Errors are costly to rectify;
c. Visual work is critical
d. Accuracy or higher productivity is of great importance
e. The visual capacity of the worker makes it necessary

The lower value of the range may be used when:
a. Reflectance or contrasts are unusually high
b. Speed and accuracy is not important
c. The task is executed only occasionally

Following table lists the NBC 2005 recommended values of illuminance for certain areas. For
complete list refer NBC 2005, Part 8, Building Services - Section, Lighting and Ventilation, Table 4.
