Renewable energy application 89

Methodology

Following is a step-by-step methodology for doing detailed analysis of GRIHA Criterion 18.
Step 1

Capacity of proposed renewable energy system
For 1 mandatory point
As per the mandatory requirement of the Criterion, rated capacity of the proposed renewable
energy system should be equal to or more than 1% of internal lighting and space-conditioning of
connected loads or its equivalent in the building. To calculate the renewable energy system capacity,
list down all the components of the space-conditioning system along with their quantity and
load (wattage). Prepare a similar list of all internal lighting equipments. Add the total space-
conditioning and internal lighting loads and calculate 1% of this value. This value is the minimum
capacity of renewable energy system to be installed on site to meet the mandatory requirement of
Criterion 18.

Example of renewable energy system capacity calculation

Internal lighting and space-conditioning loads for a project are as follows:

Table 1 Renewable energy system capacity calculation
Internal lighting load
Equipment Total load (kW)
Ground loor lighting 71.47
1st–5th loor lighting 273.5
