Building and system design optimization 45
Artiicial lighting analysis using computer simulation software for
commitment to appraisal 13.3.3
Lighting design has been described here by a simple example of a typical office space.
Step 1: Identify the length, breadth, and area of the space.
Step 2: Define room maintenance factor for calculation purpose. For AC spaces, the value would be
0.8–0.95, and for non-AC spaces the value would be 0.7–0.75.
Figure 29 Typical ofice space
Step 3: Determination of illumination level: Determine the luminance required in that particular
space depending upon the recommended task illumination level as per NBC-2005. In office
area the recommended task illumination level as per NBC-2005 is 300 lux.
Step 4: Selection of the lighting sources and luminaries: Selection of lighting sources and luminaries
depends upon the choice of lighting system, namely, general lighting, directional lighting,
and localized lighting. For example, in the office building here the luminaire selection
would be a linear source of light because it requires more light on the longer side.
