• designated smoking area is independent of the non-smoking areas in the building.
• smoking zone is exhausted directly to the outdoors such that there is no recirculation of
the tobacco smoke air to the nonsmoking zone of the building.
• Smoking zone is operated on separate ventilation systems, with higher ventilation rates
than the non-smoking areas, and is designed for at least 60 cfm (cubic feet per minute)/
person.
• Smoking zone operates at a negative pressure in comparison with the surrounding
non-smoking zone.
3) for a non-conditioned space, clearly demonstrate in the internal floor plans/ interior layout
that the designated smoking zone is properly ventilated with the appropriate location of
the air inlets/outlets.
4) for a non-conditioned space, clearly demonstrate with the help of a design narrative
• designated smoking zone if mechanically ventilated is designed for not less than 30
aCh (air changes per hour).
• Smoking zone is properly ventilated and at a minimum, exhausted directly to the
outdoors, such that there is no recirculation of the tobacco smoke air to the nonsmoking
zone of the building.
• Properly enclosed with full height, impermeable internal partitions with respect to the
surrounding spaces.

Review checklist
1) Check if the project is abiding by Section 4: ‘Prohibition of smoking in a public place’ of the
government of india’s national tobacco-Control legislation.
2) review the building plan/interior layout to see the locations of the designated smoking
areas and ensure that they are located on the building periphery. in addition to plans,
review internal sections to ensure that there are full height impermeable internal partitions
separating designated smoking zones from the non-smoking areas.
3) for air conditioned spaces review the aC system design drawings and documents:
a. to check the location of the exhaust to ensure that the smoking room is exhausted
directly to the outdoors.
b. there should be no return air ducts in the smoking zone.
c. to check that the exhaust location is not near any fresh air intake locations.
d. to check the ventilation rate of the smoking area.
4) for non air conditioned spaces review the design narrative:
a. to check the ventilation rate of the smoking area.
b. to check the location of the exhaust to ensure that the smoking room is exhausted
directly to the outdoors.
c. to check that the exhaust location is not near any window.

Possible errors
1) ventilation rate of the smoking zone may not be as per the requirement.
2) exhaust may be located near a fresh air intake (in case of aC spaces) or a window (in case of
non aC spaces).
Point allocation

1 mandatory point can be awarded if all required compliances are met.
