12 Griha Manual: Volume 5

Required documentation
1. the erosion control plan highlighting the following in a Cad drawing.
• Soil erosion control measures that are proposed to be put in place to control erosion of

topsoil during construction, such as the following.
• temporary drains
• bunds
• Swales
• Perimeter channels to divert rain-water
• for sedimentation control, the locations for the sedimentation basin will be shown on
the site, and their dimensions will be marked on the site plan. Sizing of sedimentation
control with respect to rainfall, runoff, and timing of construction should be clarified.

Review checklist
1. Check if appropriate strategies for erosion control (from the list above) have been
implemented.
2. Check size of the sedimentation basin. it should be as per the actual rainfall calculations of
the specific area where the site is located.

Possible errors
1. Sedimentation basin inadequately sized in terms of actual rainfall data and run-off from
the site.
2. Sedimentation basin and other erosion control measures do not take natural site features
into account, and are thus located in conflict with the contour plan.
Point allocation

one point should be awarded if all requirements of appraisal 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 are adequately
addressed.
Appraisal 2.3.5

Preserve topsoil by deploying suitable measures (1 point).
Required documentation

1. one site plan as a Cad drawing to demarcate areas on-site from which the topsoil has to be
gathered, the designated area where it will be stored, and the measures adopted for topsoil
preservation.
the calculated volume of the topsoil that is recovered from the site should be mentioned,
and the areas should be highlighted in accordance with this volume. the plan should
indicate areas where the topsoil will be reapplied in the landscape, after all construction
activity is complete.
2. one document (narrative) should be submitted after construction of the building, giving
a brief description along with photographic records to show that other areas were not
disrupted during the construction process. the document should also include a brief
explanation and photographic records to show erosion and sedimentation control
measures adopted. this document should corroborate with what was proposed in the Cad
drawing that was submitted as part of the previous sub-criterion.
